Civil War diaries [manuscript], 1864-1865.

Topics in the brief daily entries include duties as company clerk; a brief account of the battle of Chaffin's Farm (Fort Harrison) including the ransacking of a Confederate postmaster's house; death of a fellow soldier killed by a Confederate sharpshooter; presidential election of 1864; and the siege of Petersburg. Also the explosion of a Confederate gunboat; Thanksgiving Day activities; shooting of two deserters, news from a "Darkie" who crossed the lines; recreation including dances and baseball; African-American soldiers; and news of the war's end including the capture of Petersburg, fall of Richmond, surrender at Appomattox and death of Lincoln. Postwar entries include a tour of Richmond; repairs to Mayo's Island Bridge; mustering out and journey home and sightseeing in New York City.
